Enhanced Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange during Atlantic freshening phases ArchiMer
Rogerson, M.; Colmenero-hidalgo, E.; Levine, R. C.; Rohling, E. J.; Voelker, A. H. L.; Bigg, G. R.; Schoenfeld, J.; Cacho, I.; Sierro, F. J.; Lowemark, L.; Reguera, M. I.; De Abreu, L.; Garrick, K..
The Atlantic-Mediterranean exchange of water at Gibraltar represents a significant heat and freshwater sink for the North Atlantic and is a major control on the heat, salt and freshwater budgets of the Mediterranean Sea. Consequently, an understanding of the response of the exchange system to external changes is vital to a full comprehension of the hydrographic responses in both ocean basins. Here, we use a synthesis of empirical (oxygen isotope, planktonic foraminiferal assemblage) and modeling (analytical and general circulation) approaches to investigate the response of the Gibraltar Exchange system to Atlantic freshening during Heinrich Stadials (HSs). HSs display relatively flat W-E surface hydrographic gradients more comparable to the Late Holocene...

Environmentally driven synchronies of Mediterranean cephalopod populations ArchiMer

The Mediterranean Sea is characterized by large scale gradients of temperature, productivity and salinity, in addition to pronounced mesoscale differences. Such a heterogeneous system is expected to shape the population dynamics of marine species. On the other hand, prevailing environmental and climatic conditions at whole basin scale may force spatially distant populations to fluctuate in synchrony. Cephalopods are excellent case studies to test these hypotheses owing to their high sensitivity to environmental conditions. Data of two cephalopod species with contrasting life histories (benthic octopus vs nectobenthic squid), obtained from scientific surveys carried out throughout the Mediterranean during the last 20 years were analyzed. The objectives of...

Essais d'affinage en mer ouverte d'huîtres creuses Crassostrea gigas issues de l'étang de Thau ArchiMer
Oheix, Jocelyne; Coatanea, Denis.
Mud blisters related to the Parasite worm Polydora or to the presence of TBT in the Thau Basin waters depreciate the market value of the oysters produced in this lagoon. A solution to this problem was searched by immersing during 1 to 3 months the oysters in the open sea before being marketed, this shell improvment operation being called "affinage en mer". The objective or this study carried out over 2,5 months in automn '1991 was to quantify possible differences, biometrical or biochemical, between oyster immersed for "affinage" on bottom open-sea structures, or remained for a normal cultivation .in the Thau lagoon. No significant differences were measured, although the external aspect of shells was modified for open sea oysters. Complementary studies at...

Evolution oligo miocène des marges du micro océan Liguro-Provençal ArchiMer
Bache, François.
The Gulf of Lion margin has been created by an Oligo-Aquitanian rifting followed by oceanic accretion in the Provencal basin during the Burdigalian. Two main periods have been detailed in this thesis: • The Messinian event that needs to be differentiated from earlier strata deposition. The event also represents a clear marker (between 7 and 5,3 Ma) within the history of the basin. • The initial period of margin formation, from the beginning of continental extension (35-30 Ma) to oceanisation (around 20 Ma) The database for this study has been built using all available data (seismic and wells from industry) on the shelf, the slope and the deep basin of the Gulf of Lion. The gathering of this huge database occurred in the framework of the French GDRMarges...

The uncertainty in age estimation by otolith reading may be at the root of the large variability in red mullet (Mullus barbatus) growth models in the Mediterranean. In the MEDITS survey, red mullet age data are produced following the same sampling protocol and otolith reading methodology. However, ageing is assigned using different interpretation schemes, including variations in theoretical birthdate and number of false rings considered, in addition to differences in the experience level of readers. The present work analysed the influence of these variations and the geographical location of sampling on red mullet ageing using a multivariate approach (principal component analysis). Reader experience was the most important parameter correlated with the...

Feeding strategies of co-occurring suspension feeders in an oligotrophic environment ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Ruitton, Sandrine; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille.
Suspension-feeders predominate in the vast majority of the coastal marine benthic ecosystems, with several species co-occurring at low spatial scale. Understanding how these species cope with competition for trophic resources has been the core of numerous studies, mostly in coastal shallow systems where food supplies are diverse and abundant. Oligotrophic systems have received less attention. The aim of the present study was thus to investigate the trophic relationships established between 9 suspension feeders collected in an oligotrophic zone (Bay of Marseille, French Mediterranean). Species displayed similar isotopic ratios, consistently with the use of one main source, identified as nanophytoplankton and diazotrophic bacteria as the δ15N values were...

Fish fauna of a mixed meadow composed by the seagrasses Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera noltii in the Western Mediterranean ArchiMer
Guidetti, Paolo; Bussotti, Simona.
The fish fauna of a shallow meadow composed by the seagrasses Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera noltii was studied in the Gulf of Olbia (NE Sardinia, Italy; Western Mediterranean). Visual censuses were conducted monthly from August 1995 to August 1996. Environmental variables for water temperature, salinity and seagrass shoot density were collected on each sampling occasion. A total of 23 fish species from eight families were recorded. Planktivorous species (Atherinids) numerically dominated the fish community, followed by necto-benthic fish, chiefly Labrids and Sparids. There was no discernible trend in total fish density. Species richness, diversity, evenness and density of necto-benthic species, instead, displayed a distinct seasonal pattern, higher Values...

Glider-Based Active Acoustic Monitoring of Currents and Turbidity in the Coastal Zone ArchiMer
Gentil, Mathieu; Many, Gaël; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier; Cauchy, Pierre; Pairaud, Ivane; Testor, Pierre; Verney, Romaric; Bourrin, François.
The recent integration of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) onto underwater gliders changes the way current and sediment dynamics in the coastal zone can be monitored. Their endurance and ability to measure in all weather conditions increases the probability of capturing sporadic meteorological events, such as storms and floods, which are key elements of sediment dynamics. We used a Slocum glider equipped with a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth), an optical payload, and an RDI 600 kHz phased array ADCP. Two deployments were carried out during two contrasting periods of the year in the Rhone River region of freshwater influence (ROFI). Coastal absolute currents were reconstructed using the shear method and bottom tracking measurements, and...

Growth of European hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Gulf of Lions based on conventional tagging ArchiMer
Mellon-duval, Capucine; De Pontual, Helene; Metral, Luisa; Quemener, Loic.
Growth of European hake was estimated from the results of a conventional tagging study in the Gulf of Lions, the first tagging experiment to have been undertaken on the species in Mediterranean waters. In all, 4277 hake 15–40 cm long were tagged and released on the inshore fishing grounds during spring 2006. The overall recapture rate was 6.5% and times-at-liberty ranged from 1 to 717 d. Growth rate in hake varied with size and sex. The estimated growth parameter (von Bertalanffy k) was estimated as double previously published values based on size frequency distribution in the area. Compared with recent growth parameters derived from the tagging experiments in the Bay of Biscay, k was estimated to be slightly lower in the Gulf of Lions. With this faster...

Habitat discrimination of big-scale sand smelt Atherina boyeri Risso, 1810 (Atheriniformes: Atherinidae) in eastern Algeria using somatic morphology and otolith shape ArchiMer
Boudinar, A. S.; Chaoui, L.; Mahe, Kelig; Cachera, M.; Kara, M. H..
Somatic morphology and otolith shape were used to discriminate four samples of Atherina boyeri from three different habitats: Mellah lagoon (n = 269), Annaba Gulf (144 punctuated and 194 unpunctuated individuals) and Ziama inlet (n = 147) in eastern Algeria. For each individual, somatic morphology was described with 13 metrics and eight meristic measurements, while the otolith contour shape of 452 individuals from the three habitats was analysed using Fourier analysis. Then, two discriminant analyses, one using the 13 metric measurements and the other using Fourier descriptors, were used in order to discriminate populations of A. boyeri. The results of the discriminant analyses based on the two methods were similar, and showed that this species could be...

Habitats of ten demersal species in the Gulf of Lions and potential implications for spatial management ArchiMer
Morfin, Marie; Bez, Nicolas; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
An improved knowledge of habitat utilization by demersal species is a pre-requisite for their spatial management. Based on scientific survey data collected over the period 1994-2010, the present study investigates relationships between 4 environmental factors and 10 demersal species in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea). Generalized linear models provided statistically satisfying results in terms of both model explanatory and predictive powers. The 'biological zone' factors, based on the percentage of light penetration to the sea bottom and bottom temperature, were the most important factors, while sediments and benthic macrofauna were only significant for a few species. The type of associations varied among species, resulting in different...

Hydrological changes in the Mediterranean Sea over the last 30,000 years ArchiMer
Essallami, L.; Sicre, M. A.; Kallel, N.; Labeyrie, L.; Siani, G..
Sea surface temperatures were reconstructed over the last 30,000 years from alkenone paleothermometry (SST-(alk)) and planktonic foraminifera assemblages using the Modern Analog Technique (MAT) (SST-(foram)) along two cores of the Mediterranean Sea: MD84-632 (Levantine basin) and MD04-2797 (Siculo-Tunisian Strait). Oxygen isotope of planktonic foraminifera G. bulloides for core MD04-2797 and G. ruber for core MD84-632 were also determined. SST-alk in the Levantine basin indicate colder values at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) (similar to 14 degrees C) than earlier established from MAT, and a cooling amplitude of 6 degrees-7 degrees C, comparable to the central Mediterranean Sea. Climatic events such as the Younger Dryas (YD) and Heinrich events 1 and 2 (H1...

Impact of natural (waves and currents) and anthropogenic (trawl) resuspension on the export of particulate matter to the open ocean Application to the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Ferre, B; De Madron, X; Estournel, C; Ulses, C; Le Corre, Gildas.
Modern sediment deposits on continental margins form a vast reservoir of particulate matter that is regularly affected by resuspension processes. Resuspension by bottom trawling on shelves with strong fishing activity can modify the scale of natural disturbance by waves and currents. Recent field data show that the impact of bottom trawls on fine sediment resuspension per unit surface is comparable with that of the largest storms. We assessed the impact of both natural and anthropogenic processes on the dispersal of riverborne particles and shelf sediments on the Gulf of Lion shelf. We performed realistic numerical simulations of resuspension and transport forced by currents and waves or by a fleet of bottom trawlers. Simulations were conducted for a...

Mean temperature (MTC) and mean trophic level (MTL) spatiotemporal patterns of MEDITS survey catches were examined in 13 geographic statistical areas (GSAs) of the Mediterranean between 1994 and 2016. The study aimed to detect changes in the demersal community structure related to anthropogenic impacts. A generalized additive modelling approach was used to examine the effects of year and GSA on the MTC and MTL indexes and on bottom temperature by haul. For the MTC index, the year was significant only in 4 GSAs, while for MTL it was significant in 5. Higher MTC values were observed in central and eastern areas. Bottom temperature increased after 2010, and also from west to east and from north to south. Our results indicate that the recently observed...

La pêche aux petits metiers en Languedoc-Roussillon en 2000 - 2001 ArchiMer
Guillou, Alain; Lespagnol, Patrick; Ruchon, François.
"Small trades" refers to the body of fishing boats, excepting the trawlers, which have a trawling license and the tuna/sardine boats, which have a pelagic fishing license. The ships that fish for small pelagic fish by using a lamp are only included for the other trades they ply, if applicable. Whereas certain "small trades" work offshore, the majority of them exploit the lagoons and coastal area. The importance of the coastal areas in general, where a large number of biological and ecological processes are being developed, need no longer be demonstrated: A large part of primary and secondary production takes place in these areas, which host moreover many reproduction and nursery sites for a great many species. "Small trade" fishing is one of the main...

Subjected to multiple modifications which are responsible for important disruption in the functionning of the lagoon ecosystem during the last decenies, this lagoon is one of the most important sites for the region economy. The aim of this study is to propose a knowledges synthesis utilizable for a future fitting and management water plan. In fact, many studies realized during the last years are obsolete or uncompleted to explain the present state. Hydrogeololical studies, the most important, are not completed to understand the karst-lagoon relations. The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin, must be considered to explain biogeochemical process and the sewage discharges dispersal in the lagoon. Numerical models, with new physicochemical data, appear to be...
